How Podcast RSS Feeds Work: The Technical Guide
Technology
Every podcast is distributed through an RSS feed. Here is how it works.
An RSS feed is an XML file hosted on the podcast's website. It contains:
- Channel metadata: show title, description, artwork, author
- Episode entries: each with a title, description, publication date, and an enclosure tag pointing to the audio file URL
The `<enclosure>` tag is the key element:
```xml
<enclosure url="https://example.com/episode1.mp3"
length="12345678"
type="audio/mpeg" />
```
Podcast apps read this RSS feed, download the audio file, and play it. The feed URL is what you "subscribe" to.
**Why this matters:** RSS is open and decentralized. Any podcast app can read any feed. You are not locked into a platform — if a show leaves Spotify, you can still listen via its RSS feed in any app.
podcast.5l5l.net discovers podcasts by reading these RSS feeds and indexing their metadata.
